Internal medicine jobs are those which involve the diagnosis, management and treatment of various serious or unusual medical conditions in a nonsurgical way. People who work in internal medicine jobs are often referred to as "internists". An internist receives training so that they can diagnose various severe, chronic illnesses and situations as well as work in preventive medicine. While they word "internal" is part of the description of this discipline, the internists also learn to deal with substance abuse, and mental health issues such as ways to overcome depression. Those who work in internal medicine jobs also help treat common eye, skin and nervous system problems. They may be also referred to as a "general internist", or "doctor of internal medicine".

An "internist" is not the same as an intern when it comes to the medical field, although some people may confuse the terms.  Interns are doctors who are in training just out of medical school.  Also, internists are not family physicians.

Internal medicine doesn't only deal with the internal organs, but the human body as a whole so it encompasses other areas and specializations. The American Board of Internal Medicine currently recognizes many subspecialities in the field of Internal Medicine. These include cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, adolescent medicine, geriatric medicine, sports medicine and more.

For example the internal specialist who works in "oncology" may work with patients on treatment of asbesto cancer mesothelioma or other cancers.  Internists who work with patients with diabetes are in the speciality of "endicrinology".  "Hematology" deals with blood, "Pulmonology" with Lungs health and "Nephrology" is a specialization in the kidneys.  Therefore an internist can specialize in one or multiple areas for their career path.

So how much can someone working in an internal medicine job expect to make a year?  The salary range for internal medicine jobs can be anywhere from $148,992 to $193, 603, according to Salary.com's "Salary Wizard" basic report on Physician - Internal Medicine.  As you can see these positions offer a high yearly salary which goes hand in hand with the working in a sometimes stressful but many times rewarding field.
